About Jill's Ride for Hope 2013 — A Message from Polly and Rob Naber

We lost our daughter Jill to suicide during her freshman year at LGHS. Jill was a vibrant, talented young girl, just 15 years old. She was distraught when an embarrassing picture of herself was sent electronically and placed on an internet site. Cyber-bullying and other pressures intensified her feelings of despair, and on March 15, 2009, she took her own life. After Jill’s death, a non-profit organization named CASSY, Counseling and Support Services for Youth, was embedded in Los Gatos High School. CASSY quickly became a heavily utilized resource at LGHS, helping students, faculty, and families through pressures and difficulties, all free of charge. In 2012, community donations enabled CASSY to extend its mission by providing additional counseling services at Raymond J. Fisher Middle School.

We, and many others, greatly appreciate the services CASSY provides at LGHS and Fisher. Thank you for supporting CASSY and Jill’s Ride for Hope in memory of our daughter Jillian Bailey Naber.

50 Mile Ride

Start Time: 8:00 AM

Course Description: This is a beautiful ride with a long 7-mile climb up Hwy 9. It continues on Skyline, down Page Mill, and around Stevens Creek. The 50 mile ride is a very challenging course for highly experienced riders only. Please consider riding the 25-mile course if you are not riding regularly, or if you do not have significant experience climbing non-stop for 45-70 minutes to the summit of the Santa Cruz Mountains and descending narrow, steep winding roads.

Participants who rode last year's 100K distance may recall that there was an aid station at the top of Skyline and another aid station at the top of Mt. Eden. For this year's 50 mile event, there will be just one aid station located at the top of Mt. Eden. Cutoff time for the Mt. Eden aid station is 11:30 AM.

Jill's Ride for Hope

The Center of Disease Control reports that suicide is the 3rd leading cause of death of children between 15 and 24 years of age, and the rate is increasing.

Almost 20% of high school students have seriously thought of committing suicide.

Net proceeds from Jill's Ride for Hope registration fees will benefit CASSY (Counseling and Support Services for Youth). For additional information about CASSY, visit www.cassybayarea.org

Also New This Year: The day's events on the front lawn of Los Gatos High School will include an auction of items contributed by Jill's Ride for Hope sponsors and supporters! And the first contributions to the auction come from the Sunnyvale Department of Public Safety, which has donated ten tours of Sunnyvale's unique, integrated public safety department, and one ride-a-long with a Sunnyvale Public Safety Officer! Polly Naber has taken that tour and found it highly interesting and entertaining. She describes her experience of Sunnyvale's 911 call center as "intense." Now. Holly Lawrence of the Sunnyvale Department of Public Safety's Crime Prevention Unit wants us to note that they check ride-a-long riders for warrants. Just sayin'. Sounds real! Thanks Sunnyvale Department of Public Safety!
